Firm system

Cook County has a large internal medicine residency program (approximately 140 residents) and a very busy hospital. In order to manage both patient care and residents effectively, the program is divided into 3 Firms (A, B, C). Residents are assigned to one firm at the beginning of their training and remain with the same firm for all 3 years. This allows the residents and attendings to get to know each other better and provides a structure for most of our teaching to be small group interactive sessions.  Teaching and Didactics are done at both a Firm & Departmental Level.

The Program consists of Dr. Mathew (Program Director), Dr. Acob (Associate Program Director), Dr. Weinstein (Chairman, Department of Medicine) along with leadership from the 3 firms.

Each Firm Consists of:
  • Firm Chief (Faculty)
  • Associate Firm Chief (Faculty)
  • 2 Chief Medical Residents
  • Approximately 40 to 45 Residents
