            Dr. Suja Mariam Mathew has been program director of the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County (Cook County Hospital) Internal Medicine Residency Program since 2008. She completed medical school at the Pritzker School of Medicine and residency at The University of Chicago Hospitals. Dr. Mathew was drawn to working at Cook County Hospital after briefly utilizing county services to care for her father. She was moved by the deep healthcare need that existed among the area's underserved population, and wanted to be a part of the physician workforce committed to improving the standard of care provided.
            Dr. Mathew has a particular interest in the doctor-patient relationship and communication skills of trainee physicians. As program director, Dr. Mathew has focused on continuing the legendary tradition of clinical training excellence at Cook County Hospital while building opportunities for meaningful scholarly work by residents. Under her leadership, County residents have presented their work at national specialty conferences, published in leading peer-reviewed journals, and secured some of the finest sub-specialty fellowships available. She considers the job of program director the most enviable and rewarding in academic medicine.
            Dr. Mathew lives in a sleepy suburb of Chicago with her husband, two sons, and pet goldendoodle. She is a "soccer mom" who spends many of her weekends traveling the Midwest in pursuit of the game.
