1. Do you accept IMGs?
Yes.
2. Is U.S. clinical experience a requirement?
While it is not required, it can be a positive attribute for your application
3. What type of visas do we sponsor?
We sponsor J-1 and H-1b visas. Please note that H-1b Visas require the successful passing of USMLE Step 3, preferably prior to March 2013
4. Are we exempt from the H-1b cap?
Last year, all H-1b visas we sponsored were exempted from the cap. We don’t foresee any changes this year.
5. What is the graduation date cut off? Is this flexible or firm?
Completion of training at the medical school/residency level in the last five years is ideal.
6. Do we have a deadline for application submission?
January 1, 2013
7. Do we offer externships or observerships?
No, these are not available at our institution.
8. Can an application be sent with only a Step I score?
Yes. Early submission is highly recommended. However, full review and consideration will be placed on hold until receipt of the entire application.
9. Are Pre-Match positions being offered for the 2013 academic year?
No. Our positions will be filled strictly through the match. Please take advantage of the early registration for the 2013 NRMP which opens September, 2012.
10. How many recommendation letters are required?
Three letters in addition to a dean’s letter.
11. What university affiliation does the hospital have?
Rush Medical College is the primary academic affiliate of John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital’s (JSH) Department of Medicine. Faculty appointments, combined residency and fellowship programs and joint research efforts are numerous. Students from Rush Medical College rotate through the inpatient wards for their M3 core Internal Medicine clerkships and M4 sub-internship. Students also rotate through other electives at the hospital.
12. What research opportunities are there for residents?
The Collaborative Research Unit in the Department of Medicine oversees many specific projects that involve improving the care of the medically underserved of Chicago. Residents can also participate in basic science research with the Rush Medical College faculty. Many JSH residents are also actively involved with JSH faculty in clinical research projects via the Housestaff Research Mentorship Program. Please see our Research tab for more information.
13. What fellowship opportunities exist for CCH residents?

14. Is the residency accredited?
The program is fully accredited by the ACGME, and due for reaccreditation in 2015.
15. What is your Board Passage Rate?

16. How do I apply to your residency?
We only accept applications via ERAS. My ERAS opens July 1st for all applicants. On September 15th, you can begin applying by transmitting your application. Please refer to our How To Apply tab.
17. Do you require a USMLE Transcript?
Yes. The Selection Committee will not recommend applicants for interview without USMLE score transcripts.
18. Do you require a candidate to be ECFMG certified at the time of application?
We do not require an applicant to be ECFMG certified at the time of the application or interview.
19. What are your USMLE score requirements?
We prefer a USMLE two digit score of 85 and above from the first attempt for your application to be considered. However, we also take other factors such as clinical experience and letters of reference into high consideration. Second attempts are considered on a case by case basis.
20. For D.O. applicants, do you require both USMLE and COMLEX scores?
We prefer USMLE however, we accept either USMLE or COMLEX score transcripts. Both are not required.
21. Is there a lot of "scutwork" to perform?
Historically, Cook County has had a reputation for a lot of "scutwork". Over the years, however, this has decreased to a minimum with tremendous effort by hospital administration and ancillary services. We invite you to contact our housestaff or administration should you have any questions.
22. How much supervision do residents receive from attendings?
All medicine attendings make rounds on all patients every day. There is direct supervision and guidance of residents from attending physicians on a daily basis.
